Content & AI visibility

# Be found by people, search engines and AI systems

More people are turning to AI assistants for answers. Having information online is no longer enough on its own: it needs to be understandable, discoverable and useful to people and AI systems alike.

Sound familiar?

## Where information gets stuck

- Visitors find your website, but AI assistants never mention or cite you.
- The knowledge exists, but it is buried in PDFs, attachments and disconnected pages.
- There is plenty of SEO advice, but nobody is looking at how AI systems find answers.
- Your information needs to reach the people asking for it accurately, whichever channel they use.

Good discoverability starts with good structure.

What I do

## Content ready for AI search

![Abstract illustration of structured content being read by an AI system](https://www.mahieu.nl/assets/img/ai/aivindbaarheid-zoeklaag-v2.webp)

GEO — generative engine optimisation — means structuring content so that AI systems can find, understand and cite it accurately. It builds on the same foundations as conventional search optimisation: clear structure, factual language and reliable sources. It also considers the AI layer, including structured data, quotable definitions and files such as llms.txt.

I look at your website, knowledge base or content collection from four perspectives: the technology, the user, the search engine and the AI system. This draws on more than 25 years of experience with content structures, information architecture and discoverability, including public-sector and community websites with demanding requirements for reliability, accessibility and continuity.

Well-structured content is also easier to reuse, for example in an AI knowledge base that answers questions from your own documents. You can test that possibility through a short build project: [taking an idea to a proof of concept](https://www.mahieu.nl/en/proof-of-concept/).

What is included

## What I look at

### AI visibility assessment

How do search engines and AI systems find your content today, and where do they struggle? A baseline assessment with specific improvements.

### Content structure & information architecture

Logical organisation, clear page structures and meaningful connections, so that people and machines can find their way.

### Structured data & llms.txt

The technical layer: schema.org markup, metadata and AI descriptor files that make information machine-readable.

### Content ready for reuse

Text that serves as useful source material for external AI assistants and your own AI knowledge base, as well as supporting discoverability.

My analysis tools include my own application, [ContentInzicht](https://www.mahieu.nl/en/applications/contentinzicht/), which crawls entire websites to assess content quality, structure and readiness for AI. For an example of clear, accessible output, see [Clarido](https://www.mahieu.nl/en/applications/clarido/).

In practice

## How I apply this on mahieu.nl and for clients

This website is my own testing ground. Every page has a [Markdown version](https://www.mahieu.nl/en/ai-visibility.md) for AI agents. An [llms.txt](https://www.mahieu.nl/llms.txt) file summarises the site for language models, every page includes schema.org structured data, and AI crawlers are explicitly welcomed in [robots.txt](https://www.mahieu.nl/robots.txt).

You can see the techniques I recommend for content and AI visibility in use here, along with the decisions behind them.

In 2026, I applied the same approach — SEO and GEO, starting with the user — to complete website renewals for two clients: [rademakervastgoed.nl](https://www.rademakervastgoed.nl/) (bilingual, with a tenant reporting form as its central function) and [bacorchids.com](https://www.bacorchids.com/) (in three languages, with a searchable product range). Both include structured data, Markdown versions of every page and an llms.txt file — [more about these two websites](https://www.mahieu.nl/en/about-michel/#recent-werk).

Frequently asked questions

## About AI visibility

### What exactly is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, means structuring content so that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can find, understand and cite it accurately. It involves clear organisation, factual statements that can be quoted, structured data and files such as llms.txt.

### Does AI visibility come at the expense of conventional SEO?

They support each other. Clear structure, readable language and reliable information underpin both. Content that AI systems can process well is usually helpful to search engines too.

### How will we know whether it is working?

We establish a baseline and then monitor progress: whether your organisation is mentioned and cited accurately in AI answers, how search traffic develops, and whether visitors find what they need more quickly. The analysis sets out which improvements should be measurable.

## Verifiable evidence

### What the analysis delivers, and its limits

- **Problem:** Information is available, but lacks the structure or supporting evidence needed to be found and cited reliably.

- **Approach:** An assessment from the perspectives of technology, users, search engines and AI systems, followed by prioritised improvements and agreed measures.

- **Status:** An available service, applied on mahieu.nl as a public testing ground and in the 2026 renewals of rademakervastgoed.nl and bacorchids.com.

- **Demonstrable result:** A baseline assessment, specific improvements and a measurement framework for discoverability, use as source material and visitor behaviour.

- **Limitations:** No provider can guarantee inclusion, rankings or citations in external search or AI systems. Results also depend on source quality, authority and changes to those systems.

- **Last reviewed:** September 2026
